Boxers Converting to MMA

Just stumbled across this story about former WBO belt holder Tommy Morrison who will be fighting a MMA bout tonight in preparation for a possible comeback in the HW division.

I suppose a few questions come to mind. Would a boxer cut it in the MMA arena? Are the disciplines sufficiently alike for a boxer to make the transition to MMA? And, at 38, can Morrison make ground on the current relatively weak HW division?

RE: Boxers Converting to MMA

A boxer and a MMA fighter fight on different terms. A trained boxer has the punching power to lay out an MMA fighter with one connect. However, the MMA fighter has a lot more attacking options (kicking, kneeing etc.) I am not sure it will be possible for a straight boxer to compete under MMA rules, and I am positive a MMA fighter will not be able to fight under straight boxing rules.

RE: Boxers Converting to MMA

Reading reports of the Morrison fight, I am not sure it was a fair indicator. He gave away a 125 lb weight advantage and broke the MMA fighters nose with the first real punch of the fight, ending in under a few minutes. Afterward, the MMA fighter said he had been told not to kick Morrision o_^

RE: Boxers Converting to MMA

Interesting. Sounds like the fix was on? Perhaps MMA is more like boxing than we think!!
